What is movement education?

Movement education uses novel movement, such as rocking, to learn to release tension. There are two parts to the Trager® Approach. Passive movement is done while the client lies on a massage table or sits in a chair at his/her desk. It is profoundly relaxing and pleasurable since all moves stay within the client’s comfortable range of motion. It can feel stimulating at the same time as muscles are woken up.

Self-care moves are taught to recall the peaceful feeling. These are not exercises to do at a certain time but simple movements to integrate into daily life. It can be as simple as observing how you are moving and wondering how it could be easier. It may take a little practice to remember to do it, but results can be life-changing.

How does it feel?

Imagine:

  • Being softly sculpted
  • Feeling elasticity through pleasant elongation
  • Being fluffed with light bouncing
  • Feeling the comfort of rocking like a baby
  • Experiencing soft waves of movement from head to toe
  • Feeling the weight of a limb while being supported and becoming aware of the sensation of letting go

The receiver is able to rediscover feelings of playfulness and freedom perhaps not felt since childhood. All these sensations remain a body memory that can be recalled.

Why are you doing this?

After my first Trager® session, I felt a noticeably longer lasting sense of relaxation than with any massage I ever had. After several sessions, I realized I didn't need to live with pain while grooming dogs. I was so intrigued with this; I attended an introductory workshop, then a level I class. Learning to be really in touch with my body affected my relationship with dogs. Dogs can sense this and communicate this way, so grooming became easier.

Fully enjoying the feeling experience, I developed a new passion and wanted to share the feeling with others. I now desire to spread the value of the Trager Approach by speaking to groups, teaching the principles such as self-care through movement classes and soon teaching introductory workshops. I volunteer on the board of directors of the United States Trager Association and will serve as President starting July 2006. I believe the Trager Approach deserves more recognition in the mainstream and will help to achieve this.
